Lee’s discussion of the chapel’s use in an 1868 letter to the Board of Trustees
The Chapel's function under Lee's presidency is clear. Although the Chapel seems to have been used as a student meeting place, its primary function was religious in nature.
General Lee clearly states that the Chapel is dedicated to the Almighty God. From this paragraph, it is clear that the original purpose was religious in nature.
The Chapel had double purpose, but it was hoped that these purposes would complement each other. It is important to remember that at this time, religion and faith were not only important, but also very clearly important to General Lee.
